As soon as the car pulled up, Lucy rushed out, her arms halfway into the sleeves of her coat. She began explaining before she’d even pulled the door shut behind her.

‘Slow down!’ Debbie said. ‘Start from the beginning – and where are we going?’

‘The police station. The one on Connaught Road. I think.’

Although the story made perfect sense in her head, she could see from the expression on Debbie’s face that she was struggling to piece it all together. Lucy was so tired she couldn’t concentrate – it was still only 11am so she and Tom had got less than three hours’ sleep. She jumped from one thing to another: his disappearance, going to Stella’s house on Monday night, seeing George and his mother in Birmingham. Then the hospital and baby Rosie. Then the hotel and Stella’s escape from the police.

‘Sorry, go over that bit again,’ said Debbie, as they waited at a red light. ‘When did he go back to see George’s mother?’

After parking outside the police station, they sat in the car for a few minutes while Lucy finished, then Debbie leant back in her seat and let out a long breath.

‘Bloody hell, what a week you’ve had!’ She turned to Lucy, shaking her head. ‘I will never forgive you for not telling me all this earlier. Just think of the fun we could have had trying to put these pieces together. I could have come to Birmingham with you and been Cagney to your Lacey.’

‘That shows your age.’

‘Okay, make it Vera. More appropriate since you’re now a granny.’

‘Sod off,’ said Lucy, but she couldn’t help smiling. Debbie was by her side, none of it felt so dreadful, despite the fact that Tom was holed up in a police cell.

They got out of the car and went up the steps. The front office was small and the stench of vomit was only slightly weaker than that of the bleach which had been used to clear it up. The tone of the duty sergeant behind the desk was equally as sharp.

‘It’s up to you if you want to wait. Can’t give you any idea how long it will be.’

‘Can we see him?’ asked Lucy.

The man shook his head. ‘He’s being interviewed, Mrs Brent. I can’t knock on the door to ask if his wife can pop in for a chat.’

‘That wasn’t what I meant. I just wanted to know… if he’s okay.’ She knew that sounded lame. Of course Tom would be all right, this was a police station in an English city, not a detention centre in a totalitarian regime.

‘You can take a seat over there.’ The officer nodded towards the opposite wall. ‘Or you can come back later.’

‘Do you know how long they’ll be keeping him in here for?’

‘Not a clue, Mrs Brent. I am a man of many abilities, but being able to predict the future isn’t one of them.’ The man stepped away from the desk and pulled down a file from a nearby shelf. The conversation was clearly over.
